Garmin nüvi 42 4.3-Inch Portable Vehicle GPS (US) (Discontinued by Manufacturer)
- I had an older Garmin unit that I use when I travel but the maps are out of date and I figured the newer Nuvi would be much improved. It isn\'t and it really should be a lot better.I checked the reviews to try to determine which of the seemingly dozens of models to buy and chose this one to avoid the complaints about the annoying pop up ads that come with the units with \"free\" maps for life. This isn\'t a cheap unit and I expected much more.My biggest complaint with the old unit was the routing. I often use it in Florida and Garmin seems to love the Tamiami Trail despite the heavy traffic and stoplights because it always routes me on it instead of I-75 where traffic moves 2-3 times faster. Unfortunately the new unit continues with the same problem which makes it largely useless. My next complaint with the new unit is that the map is simply a pink line heading into the distance. You can\'t see anything except the upcoming side streets and, while you can zoom in and out, it doesn\'t give you the ability to simply look at your route, like to see if it is putting you on the Tamiami Trail again.Next it doesn\'t tell you how far to your destination or how long it will take. Instead it gives you an Arrival time. This is a joke because you\'ll never get there at the time it first tells you. The algorithm doesn\'t take into account things like stop lights, toll booths or traffic. This morning I drove for two hours at an average speed of 10 miles an hour over the speed limit and still didn\'t arrive at the initial Arrival time. It does adjust the time when you stop at a traffic light by adding it to your time but the final arrival time can be 25-50% longer than the initial time.I traveled to several destinations over the past week. On the first one it chose the wrong place even though the address, city, and zip code were correct. Fortunately I knew where I was and ignored it to get there. Most of the other destinations worked fine, except for the routes. One new thing is that it shows you how fast you are going and it also posts the speed limit. If you are speeding the speed text turns red. I like this and it worked well, though, as you\'d expect, it didn\'t always have the correct speed limit.Given my frustrations with the routes I pulled out my cell phone which has both Apple and Google map apps on it. These, of course, are free. And they work a lot better, letting you see the route it has selected, offering you alternative routes, easy scrolling to see the map, turn by turn voice and written directions and much more accurate estimates of how long the trip will take. Unfortunately they drain the battery on your phone and you may want a stand to hold it. I just ordered a car phone charger which literally cost a little over $2. I will be looking to try to sell this Garmin unit as buying it was a big mistake.
- Moved from Florida to Maine... I already had one of these, I bought this for my daughter- who also moved up here with us.Maine is not your average, nicely laid-out state! It is mostly quite rural, and we are in a rural location. We heavily rely on GPS to not only get us to our destination- but to get us home again! This weekend, our brother-in-law took us to some waterfalls, in a remote location. I had to go in a different direction from him when we left, and it was very comforting to know that our Garmin would guide us to our new destination without his guidance- and then home. It did. As always. The thing that convinced us to get her the same Garmin as we had, was that she drove up here with a borrowed T-- T-- brand GPS, and it took her to a different address. This is not uncommon here, as there are several \"Stream Rd\'s\" here in the area. Our landlord told us it is not uncommon at all for GPS\'s to take people to the wrong address- in fact, she was almost surprised our Garmin brought us directly to the correct address! I\'ve had mine for several years, and ensured I updated it just before we left Florida... I would buy Garmin again with no hesitation. I understand this is more of a basic, no-frills model- you can\'t talk to it to input addresses- but inputting addresses is very easy, it has a good search function- and it remembers addresses once you put them in, so you can find/select a previous destination. All I need a GPS to do.
- My wife almost never gets lost. Some say it\'s because she has extra iron or something in the middle of her forehead. I guess that when this particular trait was being handed out I must have been playing a Star Trek game. Then along comes GPS! I had to take a trip to another state and attend some meetings there. I had a panic attack at the mere thought of trying to find my way to specific addresses in a strange city. In the hope of being to find my way out of my driveway, I purchased the Garman nuvi 42 4,3-inch Portable GPS (US), which reduced my anxiety a little. My wife and I tried the device out when our granddaughter took us to the wilds of our area to visit one of her friends. We were able to find our way home with no problems and even my wife, who laughed at my purchase, was impressed with the Garman GPS.I am currently on my trip while writing this. The device helped me find a motel on the way here before my fear of driving at night could kick in. It also directed my to the hotel in this \"strange city\" even when I goofed and turned too soon (it immediately compensated and directed me to the hotel via an alternate route).Would I have been able to find my way without the Garmin nuvi 42 4.3-inch Portable Vehicle GPS? My head thinks so; my anxiety-laden guts are just thankful that I made this purchase.Warren(My wife and I share the same Amazon account)
- This is my second Garmin. The first was a nuvi 40 LM. I used it a total of three times before I got the great idea to update the maps, since it was free. You first had to download an express file. That didn\'t go well. Then you had to download the maps. That didn\'t go well. After losing my composure, the unit failed to work period. I crushed it and thru it away. Temper, temper. I waited 6 months or so to cool off and bought this version. About the same price. Looks about the same. Works WAY better!! I was able download the express, update the maps, and use it with no problems. The thing I like about this one the most is that she will RECALCULATE!! The last one was stubborn and wouldn\'t give up on her route. Always trying to get me to do a u-turn (which is illegal in most places I drive). I only went with 4 stars because I haven\'t had much seat time with it. I did use it to go down some back roads that I always wondered where they went. Took a lot of the stress out of it, knowing what the road ahead looked like from above. Great little tool to have!!
