Garmin Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer Paper Maps- Alaska, AA-000004-000
- I lived in Alaska for 20+ years, and have owned two versions of this atlas in the past. I\'ve always been highly impressed with the Delorme products, and this is one of the best. My only reason for trading up, over the years, has been due to the state\'s continued road-building (and ferry schedule revisions), not any failing of the map-makers.
- Very large but very useful. I bought this and a regular map and we mostly referred to the atlas while in Alaska. Being from the lower 48 you fail to appreciate how large of a state Alaska is. Having this to know what was along a several hour drive as we moved from attraction to attraction around the state was very helpful. A regular maps fails in this area due to how much has to be crammed into a small space. The only downside is the size - you could almost just use an abridged version that omitted the pages and pages of glaciers and forests that have no easy access. But the topographic detail for hiking and things was helpful.
- The gazetter of Alaska does not have the same level of detail I have come to expect from DeLorme. I am sure this is due to the sheer szie of Alaska. We used in conjuction with the Milepost book for our 1st visit to Alaska and found using them together worked fantastic. Of note: There are not a lot of roads in Alaska (there is usually only 1 way to get somewhere) and it is almost impossible to get lost as there is clear signage for towns, parks, and points of interest.
- This atlas is well put together and fairly detailed. When I ordered this, I was thinking that this would show all those minor local dirt roads that do not appear on regular maps. However, there are simply not very many roads in Alaska. If you\'re planning a road trip, even the less detailed maps will show most of the roads. So, if you\'re planning a road trip into Alaska, this map\'s scale is too big to be used for high-level planning, and perhaps not detailed enough to backpackers or other users. The book is really too large to store on a motorcycle. So for road users, stick with a folding map and save your money for The Milepost publication. The Milepost 2012 The 2012 version comes out in March, 2012.
- This Atlas & Gazetteer is excellent. It is highly usable and the right scale for my use.I have used this product in two trips to Alaska. One was by cruise ship up the Inside Passage. It helped me understand the elevations and contours of the land we went through and explored. Our second trip was by road up the Alcan Highway. Again this product was helpful and educational. The retreat of glaciers are distinct compared to the date the map section dates. Combining this with our GPS made our trip much more interesting.Anyone driving to Alaska is well advised to buy this product.
- A publication packed with useful information that is easy to understand. A must for any traveler heading to the last land frontier in the United States. Besides superior and information packed maps, the Alaska Atlas & Gazetteer provides readers with amazing insight into the culture, the settlement, the exploration and the little known facts that help readers develop an overall understanding of the state. The publication provides a remarkable insight into the Native-American population. Finally it provides pointers on where to go. I used this publication to plan my entire first visit. I love information on paper. The maps alone are worth hundreds of dollars.
- I own several DeLorme atlases and have used them I a lot over the years. I will be traveling in Alaska for a couple of weeks and I’m sure this will come in handy. Sometimes it is nice to have a physical map and not rely entirely on GPS. The Gazeteer makes up a good portion of this bound atlas.
- I was trying to plan a 2 week trip and I found many other maps of Alaska, but none with the detail I needed. For a very reasonable price, this atlas had all of the detail I needed to plan my trip. It doesn\'t pretend to be a detailed highway atlas or back country map, but will give you a great overview of the areas you are interested in and shows important features like topography, land cover, etc. And it covers the entire humungous state! It is a great value.
