Garmin nüvi 65LM GPS Navigators System with Spoken Turn-By-Turn Directions (Lower 49 U.S. States) (Renewed)
- I\'ve been using a Garmin navigator in my car for years, but decided to upgrade to new Garmin technology since the 65LM (reconditioned) with its 6\" screen was less than one hundred dollars. The unit arrived in perfect condition with all cables. My old 4\" screen was useless, the new 6\" screen is much better, the voice is better, satellite acquision is faster. I especially like having the arrival time in the lower right hand corner (this can be changed). Also nice is hitting the upper left corner allows the complete route to the destination to be shown. The 65LM fit on my old Garmin beanbag mount. One annoyance that still exists is if skip a turn, you get an nearly endless series of spoken messages to take the next turn, however, at least the annoying \"recalculating\" is largely gone. I wish there was a mute function to stop this, but alas the only way I see to do it is hit the power button to put the unit asleep. However, the endless \"recalculating\"I\'ve been playing with options. I started with restaurants, gas stations, etc displayed on screen all the time, but soon found the screen was so cluttered (at least near a city) that I couldn\'t see the route, so I turned this off. I experimented with \'North UP\', but found on a quick glance I could not tell which way the car was pointing because the on screen car symbol is too symmetrical, so I am back to Track Up.One continuing annoyance is that Recently found list fills up too easily with junk addresses. I gather from the online manual there is a way to delete an individual entry, but it is not intuitive, and I haven\'t yet been able to do this. There\'s lots of spare memory, so downloaded the online manual (.pdf) onto the LM65. Unfortunately .pdf files are not supported, and I don\'t see anyway to access the manual.-------------------(update) For a long time I used the \'Recently found\' list for my addresses, but this list has gradually filled up with junk, so I put a lot of time into trying to delete individually entries. By fooling around I was able to delete one or two, but I couldn\'t delete a lot of them and in doing this I inadvertently added new addresses making the problem worse. .I\'ve now given up trying to use the \'Recently found\' list, but I have a work around. Pull your address from the \'Saved\' list. The advantage of the \'Saved\' list over the \'Recently found\' list is that it will have far less junk, because it will only have address that you (not Garmin) have specifically saved. To populate my Saved list, which was empty, I called up the addresses in \'Recently found\' that I wanted to keep and individually Saved them. (\"i\" leads to Save button.) I then deleted all the entries in the \'Recently found\' list. New addresses will automatically be entered by Garmin into the \'Recently found\' list, so periodically those I want to keep I can easily move into my \'Saved\' list.
- All Garmin\'s GPS I have had are great-they all are a bit different and getting used to this one was difficult. I like the larger size- this one has a feature that \"searches surrounding states\" ( nice if your routine travel takes you into these states a lot) - not so nice if you travel daily in one city! The Garmin product help desk folks could not figure out how I might routinely get this function to quit. If there is a street address like the one imputed on the device in any surrounding state you get them all-- among them is the location you are at but you have to sort through which state it is before you confirm! Garmin found a way around using a different imputing area then usual--better but not as simple as my last Garmin. There\'s also a \"routing\" screen you have to mess with after every address you put in.. Mabey this one was designed for people who travel several states on a certain route?
- I took a chance on the refurbished model and I\'m sure glad I did. We went on a 950 mile trip to Mississippi and the Garmin was a huge help on the trip. Worked flawlessly and the 6\" screen was just the right size for easy reading. I especially like the way the screen splits and you get a view of the exit coming up ahead. Really makes it easy to understand which lane you need to be in. So glad we bought this and even more pleased that I saved a chunk of money by getting the refurbished model. The only thing that seemed out of date was the location of restaurants and gas stations. I downloaded the latest update for the maps before we left and still the Garmin didn\'t recognize a few of the gas stations we passed. But businesses come and go, so I imagine they can\'t stay on top of all of them. Overall, the unit worked great and we were more than pleased with the purchase.
- The 65 is not bright enough (or the colors vivid enough) in full sunlight and the image gets washed out and hard to see, particularly if you are wearing sunglasses. The different map themes help but I found a program that allowed me to edit the themes and change the colors that made them more readable. I do like the larger screen and the window that comes up when you enter a complex interchange and guides you the right way.The route selection is not always straight forward but it quickly recovers if you decide to take a different turn or street.Update: I have grown to like this item better the more I used it. It has a lot of features and the address search works well.
- Decided to get a dedicated GPS after a few trips into remote areas left cell phone GPS without good signal. Only used this for one trip so far, but it worked well. It\'s easy to tell what it wants you to do even with the sound off (I hate having the little voice constantly ordering me around), and the menu is reasonably easy to figure out, though it\'s not the MOST intuitive electronic device I\'ve ever used (managed to figure out all the normal stuff like home, saves, favorites, north orientation vs forward orientation, etc without ever looking up directions). I bought this brand over other popular ones because you have the option to navigate to map coordinates (not just roads, addresses), helpful for destinations like little-known hiking trails that aren\'t in the data bank.
- I needed this to replace a smaller Garmin. Hey, I\'m old and my eyes don\'t work like they used to.I brought the old Garmin inside and hooked it up to my laptop; copied the saved locations to the laptop; hooked up the new Garmin; copied the saved locations to the new one; updated the maps; put the new one in the truck; checked to make sure all the locations were there. Every saved location was there and were where I expected them to be. Easy as pie - no-bake lemon-cream cheese pie!I honestly can\'t tell the difference between this refurbished one and a new one. It works great and I saved some $$.
