  • I purchased this handheld GPS to replace an old Magellan handheld GPS. The Montana is light years better than the Magellan. I use this unit to navigate the woods. The GPS hardware is probably its strongest function. It picks up satellites many times faster than my old Magellan even under the cover of thick woods. The accuracy of the unit is decent. My position on the Montana screen was moving even though I wasn\'t moving. I even marked a waypoint and didn\'t move from the position and the position on the screen was moving around maybe 10 feet or so. However, the accuracy of the position is good enough for what I am using for. The battery life is very good. I used it all day walking in the woods and only used 40% of the battery life. I am disappointed that it doesn\'t come with a HuntView map for the price charged for the unit. It would also be nice if the unit could overlay weather (radar, wind speed, wind direction) and satellite even if it meant connecting to a cell phone via Bluetooth. I also use the onX Hunting app and I think the app is just as good if not better than the Montana however, the app has limitations. The app uses lots of cell battery life and loses connection in the deep woods (although you can use it offline) so that\'s the reason I purchased the Montana. Like others have said, the user manual is average at best. User YouTube videos are much better than the Garmin documentation. Overall I am pleased with the unit and this is probably one of the best if not the best available on the market. Handheld units have come a long way over the past 15 years but I still think they can do better especially given today\'s technology and a unit that cost $400+. I was debating whether to rate this 4 stars. I would recommend this unit to a friend.
  • There are some really great reviews on here. I suggest you read through them. My review isn\'t as detailed as others but, I wanted to add my 2 cents.I have a lot more \"playing around\" to do with the unit. Maybe I can find a way to tweak some of the things I\'m not happy with.I haven\'t had the opportunity to use it much yet but, for what little I have used it, it\'s done what I needed.It\'s a little bulkier than I would have liked but I can deal with that.I like the screen size.On units I\'ve had in the past... I usually keep the brightness pretty low, to conserve battery, but I found myself having to keep this one set pretty high to be able to see the screen.I keep the screen on \"lock\" but... the slightest touch, of anything, is recognized which turns the light on which runs the battery down.I\'m not happy with the battery life. A full charge didn\'t last me a full day. I will definitely make sure I have, at least, one spare set of batteries with me. Preferably more.I realllllly wish this came with a clip/carabiner. Other Garmin handhelds I\'ve owned came with them and I didn\'t have to purchase separately.Adding waypoints is easy but if you want to give them a specific name, or details, you have to go through extra steps which is a little time consuming. Not anything horrible but, I wish there were a few less steps.
  • The only thing I have to compare it to is my old Etrex 20. That difference is night and day. It\'s not a fair comparison at all.So far I only have 1 objection to the Montana - the screen is polarized. I know that it\'s intended to reduce glare but if you\'re wearing polarized sun glasses, you have to hold it in the horizontal position or it blacks out. I guess I\'ll be using it horizontally most of the time. This polarization problem exists with many electronic devices including many cell phones and many of Garmin\'s products.Initial startup was a problem. It\'ll show a screen that\'s supposed to allow you to download tens of thousands of geocaches. You select yes or no. However, the screen only stays open for less than a second. You have to hover over it with your finger to make the selection. The default appears to be \'yes\'. I wanted no and had to restart it at least 10 times before I was fast enough to hit \'no\'. Even at that, it downloaded them anyway. It took nearly a half hour to complete.I\'ve tried it with the included battery and with rechargeable AA\'s for comparison. After just sitting turned on for 12 hrs, the battery life was similar. There is no provision for recharging the AA\'s in the GPS. They have to be removed and charged in a separate charger. The cord uses a mini-USB plug. The one that came with the GPS works fine but I\'ve tried to connect it to my computer with other mini-USB cords and it won\'t connect with Base Camp. It will charge, though.
  • Our family does Geocachiing with our grandkids. Have owned many over the past 15 years and this is our absolute favorite. Easy to use, accuracy is spot on and came programmed with geocaches already pre programmed in it. Absolutely love it. Durability is great as well. Our 2 year old granddaughter loves to hold it and look for geocaches on her own being the Big Girl she now is
  • Thing reads as accurate as I could reasonably expect. Bought it along with the OnX Hunt chip for my state. Installs very easily, auto-interfaces with the software, so no additional clicking or obscure steps to activate the chip. Just plug-in and go. The only minor gripe I have, is that certain common controls, such as toggling your screen map, between designating between true north, and orienting the map more towards where your current direction is pointing towards, is very hard to find, or reason on where to find the toggle. I really enjoy it otherwise!
  • Lots of good technology I’m not that familiar with this type of stuff so I have them having a hard time my friends all have one and they love it and it is very accurate can you call me to hear you
