Garmin Forerunner 25, Small - Black and Purple

  • The Garmin Forerunner 25 was my first foray into using GPS to map/track my runs. I made the purchase earlier this year on the recommendation of Jeff Rizzo (RizKnows in social media). I wanted a watch that would pair with a chest strap heart rate monitor (I\'m not sold on the wrist based devices as yet), track my distance via GPS, replace my activity monitor (FitBit Flex) and provide basic call and text notifications on my wrist. I have been extremely pleased with the purchase for a variety of reasons. The face size is just about right; not too big, not too small. My wrists are about 7 - 7.25 inches in circumference. I find the numerals are easy to read. I found that without my glasses, I could read the data display numerals without much issue. The notifications display was a bit different as the font is smaller. I have very mild myopia with astigmatism in both eyes. I can pass my driver\'s license eye test without correction. I mention this for readers to use as a gauge; if your eyes are worse than mine, you\'ll likely need to wear your glasses or contacts in order to read the face of this device. The display is monochrome. I had no problem reading the display in various types of lighting (bright sunlight down to streetlight illumination). The backlight is sufficiently strong to allow quick reading of the display. The controls for the FR 25 are pretty simple. Four control buttons at the four corners of the. The upper buttons are for the backlight and to start your workout. The lower buttons are to cycle through various options, screens and to mark laps. It\'s operation couldn\'t be much more simple for a GPS watch. Once you get the device setup, it is simplicity itself. Step outside, start the Run function of the watch, wait for your HR monitor to connect, GPS signal to be picked up, the Start the run. The HR function picks up my HR monitor signal quickly (faster than the GPS signal). The GPS signal is picked up within a matter of seconds. The GPS receiver can be disabled for indoor/treadmill runs.I\'ve used the FR 25 several times and have found it performs extremely well at what it is advertised to do. It paired with my Wahoo heart rate monitor without a problem. The watch picks up the GPS signal relatively quickly outdoors. Keep in mind that I live in a neighborhood that does not have a lot of trees or buildings to obstruct a clear overhead view of the skies, so GPS signals come through well. If you live on a street with heavy leaf cover or around tall buildings, expect to have a different experience until you get into the clear. The FR 25 uses only the US GPS system whereas other GPS watches use both the US and Russian satellites to mark your position. I have no idea what advantage is gained over using both systems as opposed to just one.Battery life is great. This device will last for about 3 weeks on a single charge, something Apple Watch and FitBit can\'t do.There are other features that for the sake of brevity I will not mention. The cons for this device I have are as follows:1). The beep is hard to hear. You can set the device to warn you of being below or over your selected HR zone along with other alerts. I have a hard time hearing the watch when I\'m running outdoors, even at 5 AM in the morning.2). You are pretty much saddled with the default screens. You have three you can cycle through and two of them are somewhat configurable. But I would like it if I could put the HR data on the first screen along with time and distance. As the watch is setup, HR data is on screen 3 and cannot be brought up to one of the other screens. When this device is paired with the Garmin Connect website, it becomes even more fabulous. Garmin Connect allows the user to see a wide variety of fitness/activity data on your internet connected device. There is no longer a need to record your various data points in a spreadsheet or journal - they are all captured right here. HR, Avg HR, pace, avg. pace, distance...you can even track the number of miles you have on a particular pair of shoes!I have used the FR 25 for several months. I\'ve never been disappointed with it. It does as advertised, and does it well. This is a perfect watch for the beginning runner who wants to use the features the device provides.
  • I am very satisfied with this watch. I wanted something extremely simple, small, and light to give me the basic metrics on my runs without carrying a phone. This does that perfectly. I have been using it consistently for 5 months (~2 times per week).Battery: When not being used at all, the battery seems to last at least a couple weeks, but I don\'t use or wear it unless I am running. Using it ~2 times a week when running, I charge it about every 1.5 weeks.Weight/size: very light. Lighter than I thought actually. I bought the purple women\'s (I am a guy) just to have the smallest and lightest watch. Honestly, it is so light that it feels cheap, like a toy. I would be ok with the men\'s version.Accuracy: In 5 months at 2 uses per week, I have had one instance where it reported inaccurate location data. One one run it logged a single datapoint about a mile away from where I was during the first mile and then came right back on track. That screwed up the data for that entire run. Sometimes when I am running downtown near very tall buildings my instantaneous mile time goes way up. But, reviewing the map of my run afterwards I find no bad data, and the overall pace settles to normal. The time it takes to \"find\" a GPS signal when you are about to start a run varies greatly. Sometimes it takes 4 seconds, most of the time it takes 3-5 minutes. I just always start it while prepping for the run. If it is ready and waiting for longer than a couple minutes or something it begins a countdown timer to stop waiting (power save mode) and you can just cancel that to continue waiting (or being ready to go).Durability: It hasn\'t broken or fallen apart or anything like that at all. I take care of it pretty well though. I haven\'t gotten it wet besides lots of sweat.Features I like: connecting to the Garmin Connect app lets you see the following for each run: map, distance, cadence, calories, pace, time, and some more that I don\'t care about. I really like that you can connect to Strava through Garmin Connect and it automatically uploads to Strava. Also, I REALLY like that you do not need your phone. When you get done with a run, you just sync with the app on your phone and you\'re done. On the watch itself, you can see the history (a month, maybe) of your runs with basic info (pace, distance, splits, etc.). During a run, it shows you a customizable metric to view. You can cycle with a button push between two screens that each have two metrics. I set page 1 to instantaneous pace and overall distance, and page 2 to overall average pace and something else (I forgot, I never look at page 2). Either page is always displayed (it never goes blank or anything like that).I can\'t speak to any of the notification stuff (messages and calls from phone) because I don\'t use that.
