Garmin fēnix 3 HR - Gray (Renewed)

  • I have been using the Fenix 3 HR almost non-stop for the last month and a half and I was using the Fenix 2 before that for around a year. The watch software has been very stable unlike the Fenix 2 which has plagued many people with problems in both the watch software and the PC update software. I have typically been using it for running, with some walking, and hiking to climbing areas recently. While the watch has a sapphire case, I don\'t rock climb with it on. Its an expensive watch and I\'m not going to risk damaging it. Battery life has been excellent. Lasts very long when just using it as a watch, lasts very reasonably long when using it for activities using GPS. The optical wrist HR doesn\'t drain the battery anywhere near as much as I originally expected. As for handling GPS, the signal is typically acquired very quickly, surprisingly quickly in many cases. With the Fenix 2 I would use the time when I was waiting for a GPS fix to warm up a little, but with the Fenix 3 HR there is typically hardly any wait and this is when using it in the same places I would use the Fenix 2 for running. Garmin designed this as a GPS watch first, not a smart watch first. Meaning it maintains superior battery life over smart watches by not having a powerful processor. The philosophy was that people already have phones, why have a watch that does the things a phone already does and still requires a phone to really be useful... when you can just have a watch that is a watch first and can receive information from the phone if desired. Their philosophy is that one should never need to type out a message on a keyboard on a watch face, I tend to agree. You can pair the watch with your phone using bluetooth to get some cool features like weather, emails, messages, etc... as well as configure watch faces other people have created. I tend to not pair them unless I\'m configuring something. I love how the order of activities is configurable, can hide activities I\'m not interested in. Can adjust which data fields to have available during activities, their order, etc. Can download additional data fields people have coded. Some people have coded pages for activities that even have considerably more data fields than the garmin default of 4 per \"page.\" So you can see a lot more info without needing to flip to other pages during your activity. Lots of cool possibilities here. Not as many possibilities as a full on smart watch, but personally I think the battery life more than makes up for that. Additionally the Altitude, Barometer, and Compass features were important to me and while many smart watches can use GPS to get altitude and a compass bearing to get the direction of travel, they tend to not include barometric pressure... Which is personally important for me to have if I\'m camping/hiking/climbing somewhere away from civilization. The built in weather alert feature is cool and customizable, but I wish it was more persistent. As is if it went off when you didn\'t have the watch on then later you put it back on you would have no notification that the alert had occurred. Still, most watches don\'t even have this feature in the first place. Great menu for adding as many alarms as you want and configuring them to be set to go off once, daily, weekday, weekend, or custom. Standard alarm is tone + vibration + backlight and tends to wake me up reasonably well. As well you can set alarms for __ minutes before GPS calculated sunrise and/or sunset, which I could see as useful for outdoor professionals, hikers, etc... Many people are dependent on alarms on their phones these days, but its nice to have redundancy if you thought you plugged it in to charge but you didn\'t and it dies, or the power goes out when your asleep and it dies instead of charging, or the software crashes, or whatever... I wish that you could easily bulk import GPS coordinates of places your interested in instead of adding them manually, but it has not been a big deal for how I use my watch right now and adding just a few points doesn\'t take too long. The optical wrist heart rate..
  • I purchased this Garmin Fenix 3 HR June 6, 2018 (three months ago at the writing of this review) as a Certified Refurbished unit from Amazon. As such, it carries the One Year Warranty a New unit would. I went so far as to confirm this with Garmin before purchasing. I train and compete in multi-sport events which is what I purchased this for. I use it to create workouts, track my time/progress and guide me through workouts. I don\'t use this watch as a smart watch so I can\'t speak to how well it performs those functions. As a sport watch it performs well. I have used this watch for one triathlon and many training sessions. It locks on to a GPS signal quickly and I have no reason to believe the indications are not accurate. It is easy to read and the screen has remained scratch-free over the three months I have been using it, however the bezel picked up a small scratch. One odd thing I noticed a week ago: the serial number tag came off and is missing from the back of the watch (see photo). I have contacted Garmin regarding this and I have not had a response as to whether or not they will fix this under warranty. UPDATE: September 19, 2018: Garmin has responded telling me the missing Serial Number Plate is not a defect and they will not fix it under warranty. This bothers me since it occurred after less than three months of use. Garmin assure me they can get the serial number information by hooking the watch up to a computer and I can do this as well. However, if I were to misplace the watch and a Good Samaritan tried to return it to me the lack of a serial number on the back of the watch would make it much more difficult to do so.The biggest downfall I have found with this watch is the Pool Swim app. I train a lot in an indoor pool and this app is a huge disappointment. The first negative thing is you cannot set up an Auto-Lap distance. So, if I swim 2000 yards and I want 100 yard splits I need to hit the lap button every 100 yards. Otherwise, all you get is a time for your total swim distance and average pace. This should be a feature and an easy fix considering the watch is already tracking your distance. The other downfall that bothers me is the Swim Workouts that you can build through Garmin Connect. I have a Swim Workout where I swim 250 yards, sprint 50 yards and repeat several times. For some reason, when building a Swim Workout only two steps can be repeated, and one MUST be a Rest cycle. So, I can\'t create my two steps and repeat them several time, because I have to have one Rest step and Rest steps are only set up to be timed, not measured by distance. So, I am forced to make a whole bunch of individual steps and then when I am swimming I have to push the Lap button to move from one step to the next. Also, while swimming the Heart Rate Monitor is disabled.I use the Stopwatch and Timer on this watch frequently and I wish the Data Fields were customizable for them. I really like to have the Time of Day visible when using these, but it is not an option. It would be nice to have a heart rate field as well.Overall, I think this is a great watch and I like the Garmin Connect interface. I should mention that I generally get 7-10 days between charging, so the battery life is adequate. There are a few things as mentioned that would really make it better and require little more than a software update. For running, cycling and basically everything except swimming indoors I have found this watch to perform great.
  • The watch works great. However, as you can see in the picture, it was missing a screw for the wrist band. Last week I called Amazon to have them send me a screw. They couldn\'t just send a screw. They had to send an entire replacement. Ok. Fine. When I received that replacement I found it in horrible, filthy condition. The face plate and wrist band were ok. Used, but ok. But the crevasses and back of the watch (where the charging points are located) were caked in dirt. Even the screws that I wanted were dirty. While talking with Amazon support again I found a business card for the sellers. I called various times through out the day and they never answered or returned my calls. This forced me to cancel the entire order and return this watch back to them. I give them 3 stars because of their lack of support to customers.
