I\'ve been using this GPS a few weeks now. Like other new Garmins, the battery is not meant for operating this unit without being plugged into your car system. The battery backup is just a backup. That being said, it works fine.A slightly larger screen than the 6 inchers. It\'s the first GPS that gave me my favorite route across country without any rerouting by me.I am familiar with the Garmin system so I was able to quickly start using this one.Like it.
When my old Garmin became obsolete I did some checking before I bought. My GPS is vitally important whether for a long trip or just navigating to someplace local for the first time. This had everything I was looking for, even though it wasn’t the most expensive. I had tried another brand - seemed like a great deal, but was a nightmare to program and use and had to return it. This unit is easy to register and update. The larger screen is heaven and its features are the familiar ones, but improved to be easier to use. This is my third Garmin and each one has been better than the previous - they just keep getting better.
I bought this mainly to use when we go to areas that have little to no cell phone service and we need to find a business or certain address.

The Garmin Drive 6LM EX that I received required and Activation code that supposedly was on the receipt...not.After contacting Garmin I was told the there are very few \"authorized distributors\" and their biggest on is Walmart who required Garmin to add in this activation code programming. Without that code the device is nothing but a brick, a waste of time, materials and money. Even Garmin cannot give you a code to unlock the device.Fortunately the seller was REALLY fast in responding to my issue and VERY accommodating, they have definitely made every effort to make this right.After learning all of this I decided to buy a GPS locally (Alaska) and my only choice was Garmin. Apparently they did away with the whole code thing after having too many issues since the one I bought today had no such code and works great. It\'s a different model, so beware the 6LM EX might be an older model that they sold off without the codes.
This is my 3rd Garmin. The voice is always the thing that \"breaks\" on the Garmin. It gets all high pitched and breaks up making directions hard to understand. Not sure if some how the speaker cracks or what the issue is. The GPS never leaves my dashboard. Even with the same issues I always come back to a Garmin for the ease of operation.
The GPS is much more easy to read while driving for the driver. Info. on screen is well placed. Down side is when we go by lesser roads and they are not shown on screen.
It was a little difficult to get set up but I got it done and Im not a genius with electric stuff! Its worked fine.
