Garmin inReach Mini, Lightweight and Compact Handheld Satellite Communicator, Orange (Renewed)
- The original unit I purchased appeared non-functional. Customer support was excellent. They could not get the unit functioning either. The micro USB cord supplied with the unit was bad. Unfortunately, another cord I had it home was also bad. As a result they sent me a new unit. It was at that point that we discovered the bad cord. Can\'t say enough good for their customer service.Be careful setting the unit up as there is a tracking function that costs every time a bread crumb is left. I ended up with a $20 bill ( from 1 trip) I was not expecting. Can\'t figure out how to even access the bread come trail to see where I went-total waste. They need to improve their literature on how the unit functions. Still trying to figure out how to generate a pre-packaged message to send. I guess Garmin expects other users on YouTube to teach us how to use their unit.
- I got the Garmin to coordinate logistics on a Colorado Trail thru hike. Overall, it\'s been barely functional and, for the price, disappointing.Pros: it\'s rugged, it\'s lightweight, and the GPS is useful for locating myself on paper maps.Cons: the battery life is poor (<3 days); with only four buttons, it takes 5-30 minutes to type one text message; and it does not send tracking points or receive messages nearly as reliably as I expected.Specific annoyances: - The battery life is short, and none of the settings seem to extend it. This would be easy to manage by turning the device off sometimes, but... - If the device is off, received messages are returned to sender, instead of being delivered when you turn it back on (like a phone). Family can only reach you reliably if the device is always on.- Tracking points take a somewhat unpredictable amount of time to send; it\'s hard to turn the device on briefly and send one.- The \"share map\" message feature seems to expire if you turn the device off, leaving broken links.- The speed and distance estimates are off by more than 50%, rendering them basically useless, with 10 minute tracking. It works, but for $250 plus an expensive subscription plan I expected better. You\'re better off getting a satellite data connection and rugged case for your phone: it\'ll be cheaper upfront, easier to use, and probably just as reliable.
- Nice compact size. Easy to use with great battery life.
- Easy to set up, easy to use, compact
- Bought a refurbished unit, have to register and activate the device with Garmin to add the satellite service. The Garmin website would not let me register or activate because the device was still registered to another user. Garmin customer service could not do anything about this, making the device useless to me. Not sure if it is Garmin\'s failure or Amazon\'s failure but you should ensure these devices are \"clean\" of other user\'s accounts before they put it back out on the market for sale. Going to try another manufacturer....
- This is a great tool for those safety conscious adventurers. It worked great for me on a one week adventure motorcycle trip where I was out of service range for a portion of it. The accuracy is astounding. I would send preset messages to notify my contacts of where I am. Once I was home and looked at the GPS link this unit sent.... it was no more than a couple feet (if any) off from where I was standing. This unit is lightweight. Battery lasts a couple days (if not using tracking) and is easy to use once you spend a few minutes with it (and watch a YouTube tutorial.)
