- Bought this for my boat due to the many positive reviews. Upon receiving this unit, I registered it online and then proceeded to run a self-test. I ran the test twice and both times it failed to obtain a GPS position lock (be advised that you are only allowed a total of 12 self-tests using GPS due to battery constraints). I was outside with a clear view of the sky, my cell phone and other GPS devices have never had a problem yet here I am about to burn up a 3rd test (leaving only 9 tests). This time I placed the unit on the ground and it was finally able to get a GPS lock, so the act of me holding it in my hand must have been enough to block the signal. I find this very troubling for an emergency beacon where a quick GPS lock would be a basic requirement. Explain to me why the GPS in my truck, and the GPS in my phone, and the GPS in my boat can all quickly obtain satellite locks but this expensive PLB can\'t do the job? And don\'t get me started on the fact that the battery can\'t be replaced (or recharged). Now I\'m left with 9 tests and questionable GPS accuracy (and fear of performing additional tests). When this unit dies, I\'m going to be switching brands. Hopefully, I can find a unit that has a rechargeable battery and a GPS that actually works (and I realize that adding a charging port might compromise the weather-sealing, but Qi charging is mainstream now and could easily charge the device without needing a physical charging port). I just hope this thing works if/when I need it to work.
- Seems like a solid product, has a test feature so you can make sure its working.
- This unit does one thing and does it redundatly well. Best of all its water resistant and floats. Puts out 5 watts of power to get a signal out in most conditions. (Unlike the other subscription based units that only put out less that half a watt). And no pesky monthly charges. This and my hand held ham radio will supplement my sketchy cel phone when I\'m in the outdoors here in northern Idaho. Its a great choice to keep you alive, its cheap life insurance. All you do is register the device and add contact numbers to your file in case of emergency. A sticker is sent in the mail, and you\'re covered.
- I opted for the slightly more expensive version..PLB 425 ..it has a nice screen that gives you instant acknowledgement the unit is on and working. (I have only tested it - not actually activated it) Comes with a carrying case ..you can attach to your belt or Velcro loop to something. I ordered mine from Orbital Satcom corp..an outfit from the United Kingdom. My first unit had an issue with the labels - the date of manufacture was missing (thus I was unable to register it with ACR for the warranty. After contacting both Orbital Satcom and ACR..i was sent a new unit...problem solved. Check your label on the box and the unit itself.. make sure date of manufacture is on there.
- Purchased this to keep us safe when we\'re out and about on our boat or someone else\'s.Surprisingly small and compact.Whose life isn\'t worth the money this thing costs?I\'d rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.Leave it in our dry bag.Highly recommend.
- Got this for Christmas. Registered the unit and tried to conduct their recommended \"Basic Self Test\". Unit failed the \"Self-Test\". I have contacted ACR. I will update this based on how they respond. So to update this review... It took ACR about a month but they did ship me a new unit free of charge and the new unit passed both the basic self test and the gps test. I will therefore bump up my rating but my faith in this unit has been shaken a little because I am not the only one to have a brand new unit fail the \"Basic Self Test\".
- We are pleased...high quality product.
