Garmin 010-00321-31 18x USB GPS Navigator Unit,black
- It is a great little unit. I bought it for a trip in europe thinking I could take my laptop in addition to an automotiveGPS unit. I could find topo and marine maps/charts but nothing for roads. The 18X worked great on the topo maps. I haven\'t tried nautical charts. Google has a mapping application but it is wedded to a serial interface. I have been having trouble understanding what I need and then finding a 3rd party driver to convert a USB to serial. I should have done more research before I purchased the unit. I can\'t fault the 18X, it did what was expected of it. If only Garmin gave you some up-front help on apps/software. I did call them. They do not support maps for this unit. So how is that folks. This product appears to be an orphan child.
- This product worked GREAT and VERY QUICK with Delorme Street Atlas 2015 but does NOT work with Microsoft Streets and Trips 2013(Now defunct). It DOES work with Garmin GPS PC software very well and quite accurately! Two out of three isn\'t too bad! This appears to be much more accurate than the standard Delorme sensor and Bluetooth sensor as well. This one seems to be made of far more superior material that will stand up against the elements a bit more than the other. So far I am quite impressed with it\'s accuracy and quick power up and program recognition ability. If I need another one the you can bet that THIS is the one that I will go to buy again for another vehicle to use!
- I\'ve owned two of these units, and use them in a mobile environment with a laptop to find utility equipment in municipal environments.I can\'t use a conventional dashboard GPS due to the need for service people to interchange files that show equipment locations. That being said, this is a solid and reliable unit. My first gave up the ghost after a lot of years due to abuse to it\'s USB connector. This one works just as well.Interfaces well with the DeLorme laptop mapping software. Unit is weatherproof and durable, and has a strong magnet in the base. Generally, I find leaving it on the dashboard is very sufficient for good results.Cable is long enough to comfortably reach the laptop anywhere in 4 passenger vehicle.A little pricy, but worth it. Depending upon your computer you may need the DeLorme \"Spanner\" software, or you may need to download drivers for the unit. I found it worked out the box with Windows 7 Pro.
- I bought this GPS receiver to drive OpenCPN on a Windows 7 64bit laptop when the cheaper, generic BU-353, with the Prolific driver failed to work for me. The Prolific driver requires something like XPORT Serial COM port splitter to avoid USB port shutdown issues. However, XPORT is not available for 64bit Windows. The Garmin device does not seem to have this drawback. So far it has worked fine without the problems I had with the BU-353. I have not compared performance but have to think Garmin\'s product is as good as the generic. The built in USB cable is about 6\' (2 meters?) but it would be nice to see that closer to 10 feet given the price. When using this on a boat you always need a bit more lead to run the cable from a hatch overhead. That would make it a 5 star product.
- I bought this device several years back for an engineering project, and I only got to use it extensively last week. It works great; position accuracy is great. Be aware that the receiver\'s data output is Garmin proprietary. If you need NMEA-formatted output to interface with some certain mapping applications such as Streets & Trips, you will have to download (free) Franson GPSGate software which works with a single mouse click. Garmin provides a link to the software download on their customer support website.
- We have just started to use these in our fleet and they work well with our software plugged into a laptop.2 issues: First is the magnet is not strong enough to stick to the top of the dash board with Chevy or Ford trucks. We have only one vehicle that it will stick to. Second is the length of the cable, at 6 feet there is way more than needed for a laptop on a vehicle mount. It would be nice if there was at least a couple of choices in length.
- It worked fine on a Windows10 computer. However, the wire is a bit clumsy and akward.
- I purchased this product because Garmin is known for good GPS units. For some reason it would not stay connected with Nobeltec Odyssey and my Dell Laptop. I could not get it to stay connected or even for Odyssey to find it using their connection wizard?? Also other GPS units did the same thing?? In the end, I think the issue was my older Dell laptop and Windows 7 having a USB conflict. I finally got a Zenstar III to stay connected, but it was a struggle to get it recognized the first time?? I would not recommend Odyssey at this point since there are chart issues with it also. The Garmin is probably a very good unit - I just had weird things happen without a real definite resolution??
